Ah, interesting. Yeah, it was the constant victimization that got me down. She's a strong character but always ended up without power, more than the other characters it seemed to me, and through no fault of her own.
Damn, I'm having a hard time imagining her as what you said above (I wont refer to it on the off-chance someone who hasn't seen it and wants to remain unspoilered reads our comments). Though it would make for a very interesting relationship between her and Pam, and it would be interesting to see how it would change her relationship to other characters too.
Hmm, I'll think about watching it if I get the opportunity. I would kinda like to see Tara be able to be proactive and awesome, instead of just somehow managing to be awesome in spite of all the crap the show puts her through. Though poor Tara, that being the reason she finally gets to have power.
But hey, thanks for the chat. I didn't do True Blood in real time, so I never got to see what people were saying about it or read any interesting meta. Or share my Tara love :)
Yeah, I don't blame you. I 'quit' the show several times thanks to their treatment of Tara but I heard about what they were doing with her in season 5 and had to check it out. I won't say there was no victimization in season 5 because this is True Blood we're talking about but it was definitely an improvement over her treatment in the previous seasons. And I'm hoping season 6 will be even better, though I'm not counting on it given the show's track record.
You should probably stay away from the fandom, tbh. Tara got a TON of hatred over the years, though it has seemingly died out a bit since last season. But yeah...this fandom is not female character friendly.
Now you've got me curious...both as to why Tara got hatred, and if it's not female character friendly (which is disappointing because the show at least has a lot of female characters with decent screentime and their own stories) is that because there are major slash pairings - the reason I've come across female character hate in other fandoms - or some other reason?
Granted, I haven't ever been active in the fandom (I'm mostly a lurker, at least in this fandom) but from what I could tell:
Of the main female characters, the only ones who seem to be mostly tolerated by the fandom are Pam and Jessica. Sookie and Tara seem to get the most hatred, at least in the LJ/YT communities. Arlene and Holly aren't popular but I feel that has more to do with their storylines than anything else, as no one really seems to care what drama they're going through each season.
I...don't think it's a slash thing? Eric/Sookie is BY FAR the most popular ship, with a lot of other Eric pairings also being relatively popular (Eric/Godric, Eric/Pam, Eric/Bill.)
I don't really know what prompted the Tara hate but the Sookie hate seems to stem from her being the center of the Eric/S/Bill triangle and fans blaming her for stringing the guys along or not picking one or whatever other crap they can think to blame her for. That tends to be the case in a lot of fandoms with a love triangle at the center (I'm thinking of The Vampire Diaries and Lost as other big examples.) In the early seasons, a lot of the hate seemed to be from books fan who didn't like the TV version of Sookie. I haven't seen as much of that in recent years, but I suppose it could still be a factor.
